HOW E-MAIL WORKS
ElektroniElectronic mail or e-mail is a way to create, send and receive messages via the electronic communication systems.

Electronic mail has been created as a metaphor for the traditional mail - messages are called letters, letters are being sent to mailboxes where they can be retrieved and read at any time. Mailboxes are supported by mail servers that cover e-mail addresses of a certain name area. Usually, the access to a mail server (mailbox) is protected by a password.

Most frequently, information to the receiver is sent not directly but through the intermediate links - SMTP server which delivers letters to the server responsible for the mailboxes (POP3 or IMAP). Several other mail servers (usually SMTP) may exist between these servers.

Some mailbox servers may be accessed through defined protocols (POP3, IMAP, MS Exchange, etc.) that are supported by one or another mail application (Thunderbird, TheBat, Outlook, Outlook Express or similar), or through web-interface-webpage (acting as specific IMAP, POP3 or similar client) by using a browser (Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer). Quite often mail servers support more than one protocol.

E-mail sending is usually free and is executed via the SMTP server of the Internet provider. The upkeep of e-mail mailboxes is usually a paid service, carried out independently from the chosen Internet provider (the providers of the Internet and e-mail services may be different).
